Flight Lessons

?Urban?Wildlife Folk Opera
by Deborah Crooks

Flight Lessons, a folk opera by Deborah Crooks, is?inspired by the true story?of Peregrine Falcons and their coexistence with humans at Oakland¡¯s Fruitvale Bridge. It explores themes of home, migration, adaptation, and the limits of the man-made environment. The narrative follows an urban wildlife biologist monitoring a breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons on the bridge, highlighting how their lives intersect with the local community after one of the birds is shot.

The opera reflects on life, loss, nature, and humanity, asking how we can better value the wild in urban spaces and how one recovers after loss. "Flight Lessons" prompts us to consider our relationship with nature, resilience, and the deep connections between humans and wildlife.
