News from the City of Berkeley

Live music concerts in Berkeley parks

May 10 through September 13, experience a mix of rock, bluegrass, funk, kids�� music, and Latin rhythms at family-friendly concerts across Berkeley.

Join us in Berkeley parks on seven Saturday afternoons this summer for live music concerts that cater to a variety of ages and tastes.

Moms of all ages, those who want to celebrate them, or just jazz lovers, can head to the Berkeley Rose Garden on May 10 for a Mother’s Day celebration of live music, cold drinks, dessert, and flower giveaways.

Toddlers can sing and dance along with an interactive performance with puppets. Kids up to age 12 might enjoy funk-rock from a costumed band with kid-friendly lyrics and themes.

We also have concerts for those who revel in rock music, fans of funk, and supporters of soul. You can dance to Latin rhythms or, in our last concert on September 13, unwind with acoustic bluegrass by the Bay.

We've spread the concerts across many Berkeley parks, from Shorebird Park on the waterfront to South Berkeley and up into the hills. At least one will be close to you. (You can still come to all). Some of our concerts will include food trucks. All will have live music performed amidst our community.

Saturday music series runs May 10 through September 13

Our Music in the Parks series offers local music, kids�� activities, and entertainment, with some events featuring food, games, or guest speakers.

May 10, 2:00 pm��5:00 pm at Berkeley Rose Garden: Mother’s Day Hats and High Tea will feature music from the Berkeley High Jazz Society. We’ll also have cold drinks, cake, flower and dessert giveaways, and multiple photo booths. Activities for the kids include crafts and a bubble show. Seniors can get a free shuttle ride to and from the event.

June 7, 2:00 pm��4:00 pm at King School Park: Tot Fest will feature Andy Z and the Happily Ever Laughter Fairies. Fruit popsicles from Bliss Pops will be available for purchase.

June 28, 2:00 pm��4:00 pm at Ohlone Park Baseball Field: Rockin�� Fest will feature the cover band, Keep On Truckin��. Food trucks will be on site.

July 12, 2:00 pm��4:00 pm at Grove Park: Funk Fest will feature the musicians Michael Jeffries, Nzuri Soul, Ric Alexander, Rhonda Benin, and Soul House Band. Food trucks or vendors will be on site.

July 26, 2:00 pm��4:00 pm at San Pablo Park: Kids Fest will feature music from Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies. Brown Cap Soft Serve will be available for purchase.

August 9, 2:00 pm��4:00 pm at Strawberry Creek Park: Salsa Fest will have music by La Gente SF. You’ll be able to buy food from Las Cabañas.

September 13, 2:00 pm��4:00 pm at Shorebird Park: Bluegrass Fest will feature music from Gin and Boots. Beverages for purchase from Roaming Bean Coffee.

Come early to pick out your spot. No alcohol or controlled substances are allowed. Bring your blankets or low back chairs to enjoy the music.

When traveling around the city, consider public transit, shared mobility options, or carpooling with friends.

Community concerts are just one of a variety of events organized by the City's Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department, which offers a variety of camps, classes, and activities catering to diverse age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds. See and help place sites for new bike share stations

Let us know online or in person about proposed spots for eleven new bike share docking stations �� racks where users can rent and return bikes and e-bikes for one-way trips across Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville.

These 11 new stations would expand Berkeley’s current network of 37 docking stations, offering a low-maintenance, secure way to get around by bike.

With Bay Wheels stations distributed across the City, bike share can also help you and others bridge a barrier to mass transit known as “the last mile�� the distance from a BART station or AC Transit stop to someone’s home.

Weigh in on the proposed locations at our May 14 community meeting or by an online survey that closes on May 21, 2025 at 11:59 pm. The finalized locations will begin installation this summer.

Volunteer at monthly Berkeley waterfront cleanups

Individuals, families, or groups can volunteer to be part of monthly cleanups at Berkeley’s waterfront and Aquatic Park.

On the third Saturday of each month through August, volunteers start by gathering at the Shorebird Park Nature Center at 9:00 am for a service-learning presentation and safety talk. We’ll provide all the supplies you’ll need.

When possible, staff and volunteers sort, tally, and weigh collected plastic to assess its impact.

We recommend that everyone �� especially large groups �� register in advance so we can plan accordingly. Individuals or small groups can register in person upon arrival.

Come out to our next cleanup on May 17.

Learn skills to help your community respond after a disaster

Take emergency preparedness classes with fellow Berkeleyans to learn practical skills you can use during and after disasters.

These classes include skills such as:

Organizing neighbors into teams to respond to emergencies

Extinguishing fires

Finding and rescuing victims using basic tools

Setting up a medical triage area and performing basic first aid

Helping survivors cope with the extreme stress after a disaster

You can take any or all of the seven different classes in this series, but those who take the entire series will have the opportunity to become certified by the Berkeley Fire Department to educate and organize others, further building the resiliency of their own neighborhoods and Berkeley as a whole.

Each of these 3-4-hour-long classes will be offered two times in person from May 3 to August 2, 2025, with evening and weekend sessions available.

Play a vital role in your community during a disaster. Register for all classes via��Eventbrite as early as one month before each class begins.

Rhythmix Rising Seas is a free outdoor performance series bringing music, dance, and theater to Alameda’s waterfront from May through August. Each event transforms a shoreline location into a vibrant stage for global traditions, immersive storytelling, and community connection.

The first event features Batey Tambó, a women-of-color-led ensemble rooted in Afro-Indigenous Puerto Rican Bomba. Choreographer KT Nelson and dancers present a participatory piece inspired by local voices, while Jeff Raz’s “Climate Detective from the Future”��returns with clues for a brighter tomorrow. With live performances and hands-on activities, Rising Seas invites all ages to explore our shared connection to culture, place, and possibility.

Luna invests in dance research as a way to advance our field and investigate what dance research can be, who shares it, who has access to it, and how it can be presented. Radical Research highlights the legitimate and rigorous inquiry of BIPOC artists, whose experiences are often neglected by traditional institutions of research and education, and amplifies the diverse ways embodied research can be conducted through dance creativity.

Artists, like scientists, approach their work from a place of inquiry. Sometimes the research question is fully formed, but more often curiosity spurs intuition that leads to discovery through rigorous creative practice.

Celebrate the Community Women's Orchestra’s 40th Anniversary with us!

We are so excited to welcome you to our 40th Anniversary Gala Concert, where we are commemorating 40 years of engaging, celebrating, and inspiring women in classical music. In honor of this achievement, the suggested ticket price for this special event is $40. Donations offer vital support for CWO and our mission of supporting women in classical music, including music rentals, commissions of new pieces by female composers, coaching for our musicians, instrument rentals, reserving performance venues, and more.

In this unique concert, we will be joined by the Berkeley Women’s Community Chorus in a performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams�� Folk Songs of the Four Seasons, a cantata for women’s voices. This is the first time BWCC will perform with a full orchestra, and we are delighted to welcome them in celebration of our shared mission of elevating and engaging women in classical music.

The Alameda Education Foundation presents Art Changes, showcasing student artwork inspired by this year's theme, "Our Earth: Embracing All Communities." The theme draws from Salma Arastu’s nature-focused collage paintings, Maw Shein Win’s poetry on belonging and ancestry, and Will Chang’s nighttime photography of Alameda. Student artwork from local schools, including Bay Farm, Earhart, Edison, Franklin, Love, Maya Lin, Otis, Paden, Ruby Bridges, Lincoln, Wood, Alameda High, and Encinal Junior & Senior High, will be featured in this creative celebration.

Rhythmix Rising Seas brings Alameda's waterfront to life with performances of global music, dance, and theater that blend art and climate awareness, encouraging conversations on environmental issues through community involvement.

P.S. Do you have solar panels? PG&E wants to void your solar contract, cut your solar credit, and charge you a solar tax. (On top of the upcoming Income-Generated Fixed Charge!) They're trying to sneak it past the Legislature with Asm. Calderon's (a former dirty utility employee!) AB 942.

This is all part of PG&E's attempt to scapegoat rooftop solar instead of admitting the real reason for skyrocketing bills: out-of-control utility spending on poles and wires with no accountability.

Tell your CA lawmakers: Don’t break the solar contract! No solar tax! NO on AB 942!

The Rhythmix Asian & Pacific Islander Arts & Culture Festival is a celebration of culture and heritage, where the community comes together to enjoy music, dance, food, and creative activities. Performances from Hālau Makana, The Sampaguitas, Dholrhythms Dance Company, Samoan Solutions, Viet Steps, Lion Dance ME, Oakland Khmer Angkor Dance Troupe, and more highlight the diverse traditions of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
