New program for Bay Area Artist Advocates!

Announcing a new program for Bay Area Artist Advocates

The Grassroots Artists Advocacy Program (GAAP)?is a cohort-based fellowship program for artist advocates that live or work in Oakland or San Francisco. Artist Advocates include diverse artists, culture bearers, and creative workers with a dedicated and committed artistic or cultural practice who directly engage in advocacy and policy development to advance the holistic well-being of the field. Each artist advocate will identify a change they want to help make happen, and they will be supported in developing an advocacy plan to enact that change.

?

CA for the Arts will select a cohort of five San Francisco and Oakland-based Artist Advocates to engage in a nine-month curriculum that will launch in November 2024. The GAAP application will open on October 1, 2024 and close on October 14 at 11:00 pm PST.

?

Please join us for an informational webinar on Friday, October 4 at 12:00 - 1:00 pm PST with Program Lead Ted Russell, Director of Programs NeFesha Yisra¡¯el and Director of Field Engagement, Tracy Hudak. They will review the program and application process and answer questions.

?

For any questions in the meantime please contact GAAP Program Lead Ted Russell Ted@....?

GAAP is funded by The Kenneth Rainin Foundation.

The State of the Freight: An Update

Photos by Dave Padilla, PC Mu?oz, Ronald Davis

Dear Friends,

Earlier this year, I shared the challenges facing Freight & Salvage as we navigated the post-pandemic landscape. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in our journey. Today, I¡¯m excited to share positive developments and outline our goals for the future.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our team, we¡¯ve made significant strides in addressing our financial challenges. Through strategic cost-cutting measures, identifying new funders, and reducing our operations overall, we've successfully reduced our deficit from $1.2 million to $500,000. This is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Freight community.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of the Freight, we have set a fundraising goal of $100,000 from new supporters this year. Along with the ask for pledges from new supporters, we are increasing our rental operations and stepping up our efforts to cultivate corporate sponsorships and grant opportunities. These new revenue streams will be vital in supporting our artistic programming, education initiatives, and operational costs. Additionally, we have been working with a Bay Area-based brand identity firm to strategically implement a new brand image in an effort to kickstart necessary changes to expand the diversity and growth of our audience. Our team embraced change head-on, and has set a new course for the Freight¡¯s bold future.?

Your continued support is essential as we work to build a sustainable future for Freight & Salvage. Whether it¡¯s attending shows, encouraging friends and family to do the same, or exploring opportunities for increased giving, your involvement makes a tangible difference.

We are committed to transparency and will continue to share our progress with you. There is more work to do, but we are optimistic about the financial health and sustainability of the organization. Thank you for being a part of the Freight & Salvage family.

Musically yours,

Clayton Shelvin
Managing Director

THANK YOU for making Luna's Ribbon Cutting Celebration a huge success!

Over 100 people of all ages came out to celebrate the official opening of our new, ADA-accessible community dance center in Southwest Berkeley. Whether you traveled from across town or as far as Los Angeles, we truly appreciate your presence.

Luna's Teaching Artists, Zoe and Moriah, lead exuberant Family Dance classes, filling our studio with joy, connection and discovery. See below for photos.

(Don't forget! They will be teaching afterschool and Saturday kid's classes at Luna, as well as in Berkeley this Fall. Mark your calendars and sign up! See below for more details.)

Special shout out to Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arregu¨ªn, Councilmember Terry Taplin (Berkeley District 2), and Berkeley Chamber for their heartfelt remarks and support of Luna over the years.

Thank you to Karamo Susso for his beautiful music. We also appreciate Berkeley Bowl, Monterey Market and The Cheese Board Collective for donating delicious treats.

Enjoy the photos below, and view more photos of the event and our studios .
