Installing Z stepper #Step Z #step

I am slowly motorizing my lathe in order to use the AtomicELS or other ELS method.

Here is my leadscrew end:

And here is my adapter:

?I will be posting pictures of my attempt to mount the motor.

What's that lovejoy inc sticker?
And what is the adapter going to connect to, with it's two prongs?

The Lovejoy is the coupler for the motor.

More pictures are coming?as I move along.
Which might take a couple?of weeks (or months) as there are things I have to do and not be in my?shop, but maybe if it rains ...

Craftsman?101.07403 12x36 Lathe, Clausing 8520 Vertical Mill, Buffalo 4x12 Mini Lathe, Delta 14" Bandsaw. (The 12x36 lathe, 8520 and bandsaw are all powered with a Consew 3/4 hp Brushless DC motor)?

Well I got tired of watching the Jets and the giants lose their football game so I figured I was taking the day to watch football but that is a loss so I should go to my shop and work on my Z drive.

Here is the Lovejoy coupling on the stepper motor:

Here is where I need to mount the motor:

Here is my setup on ny Clausing 8520 vertical mill, the angle iron is 6" off the table and really vibrates when milling the bolt slots, was not a pretty experience.

Here is the angle iron (6" x 4" x 3/8") attached to the lathe with the stepper.

Here is a potential motor mounting bracket. The bracket is for a NEMA 34 Gear Motor. it is a lot bigger than I need for the NEMA 34 motor, but I can picture how I might modify it to use.

I see that you are not driving your encoder with a toothed belt. Surely that is not your final setup?

So this is the stuff you "have to do and not be in your shop" ;)
So you're going to have "direct-drive", right?

D1cky, you are the first to mention that, yes I have a flat belt. It is running on a toothed gear.
I wonder if I could heat the existing flat belt and form a toothed belt.?

I usually take Sunday afternoon off to watch football, it is a waste of time with the Jets and Giants.
I did watch the Patriots/Seahawks game in the evening, now that was a good game. I used to be a Patriots fans when I lived in New England
but my allegiance?moves when I move so I have been a fan of the Patriots, the San Diego team ( I cannot remember which team that was),
the Kansas City Chiefs, lived in Indiana before the Colts came so probable a Bears fan, moved to Gainesville?Florida and mainly watched college football (Florida and Georgia), moved to Ohio? and watched the Bungles (Bengals) and Cleveland Browns, then Southern New Jersey and became a Eagles Fan and now I live in New York, at least the Giants did win the Super Bowl.

Yes Gene, direct drive. I have some 3.5Nm steppers but it was suggested that they could?be too weak for a 3/4" 8TPI? leadscrew.
I did get a set of 8:1 pulleys so I could have gone that way but just did not know what size stepper I should get.
I have seen the 3.5Nm steppers on mini lathes with gear reduction.

So I went to ?and I put together a $150.00 order for a larger stepper with a $130.00 shipping charge when StepperOnline
sent me a Ebay promotion for a big 12Nm stepper for $139.00 with free shipping so I went with the big motor from Ebay.

It is better to have too much torque than too little.

Actually with my setup it would be easy to change motors so maybe I will do a study of just how different sized steppers perform.
There are no clear examples of different motors being used that I have found. Of course that will be a spare time project.
