Forgive my ignorance, but could you do this on a mini lathe, using appropriately sized (smaller) components, i.e. is the (average?) motor powerful enough etc. Meaning has anyone in the 7x12 community actually done this?

It could be done on a mini-lathe, as you say, with appropriately downsized material.

Caution on the fire hazards of such experiments!
