Re: Starrett merger/acquisition

It is very hard for a traditional U.S. company like Starrett, at one time existing mostly in the bubble of the U.S., to remain competitive once the manufacturing cmpetition went worldwide.

A very long time ago I got some business advice that, "If you do not obsolete yourself, somebody else will."

An example of this is Fluke which is a top-rated manufacturer of multimeters and such and are often "specified in" in large companies and government operations.? (And part of their business model is to support the same models for many years so that written procedures by companies and the gov don't have to be changed.)? They now have some of the meters manufactured in China.? They aren't real public about this.? However, they maintain VERY tight control over all steps of the manufacturing quality and the product is as sound as ever - so far as I know.

Many U.S. companies suffer from "corporate inertia" or suffer from not looking further into the future than trying to make the end of this quarter look good.? I don't know the details of why this merger occurred.

I don't know what MiddleGround Capital's plans are.? I know they acquired Castle Metals last year.? They also acquired Banner Industries and seem to be putting the two companies together, which will probably streamline things.? I suspect their plans for Starrett might be along similar lines.?

Oh great¡another ¡®vulture capitalist¡¯ strikes. Buy the company, load it up with debt (to you, of course) sell off anything of value, fire everybody, move on to the next one leaving an empty husk behind.

I have a handful of actual Starett tools¡

My quest is not direct to a 7x12, however, it is close to EDM ?
For next Christmas I have to connect many 2 mm iron strings together, in all directions

1) If you using EDM to remove tap you broke in the mini lathe it is related.?

2) Now if doing machine using EDM and not using a mini lathe it is not related?

I only want to tap removal that mini lathe broke

Thanks Chris

Lot of nice things there in Ebay.

Problem is minimum 9 pages to chose from.

I think I will chose something over USD50.

Could you use one of those welders made for welding wires onto Lithinum Ion cells?

?

Search for "battery spot welder" on ebay or wherever

I can made 1 mm holes and screw or nail them together, I have done it on my protos.

Soldering is also an alternative, however, not my favorite.

The wires are in tension, so when I start soldering the second spot, the first (#¡è%¡è#)

?

So I am asking for advice to shop a small ¡°welder¡± for 2 mm iron wire. Only 500 ¡°welding¡± connections.

Re: Starrett merger/acquisition

As if they weren't already going for big bucks on ebay.

Sometimes the prices on the old stuff is higher than just buying new from Starrett.

There are great EDM videos on YouTube. The circuit is simple
All I want EDM is for removing small taps that broke in the mini lathe.

I have seen simple manufacturer machines the using tap water just for removal of taps

Dave?

Re: An EDM for Tap removal

EDM maybe very old aka { Electrical discharge machining spark erosion }
The erosive effect of electrical discharges was first noted in 1770 by English physicist Joseph Priestley.

EDM was for machining around the 1940's . Before the 1940's they used sand / grit and ground down the part.??

I do not know about tap removal the first ad I found was in 1950's. It is downloaded section.??

Good stuff.
There is a huge amount of technology out there.
I'm still in the age of simple machining and napkin design. No edm, CAD, mill power feed, CNC, etc. 8^)

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum

There are great EDM videos on YouTube.? The circuit is simple.?

People are making machines out of 3D printers.? ?It seems to be 10% EDM process, 90% Not killing yourself.? ?If you work hard enough, you can get that pesky tap out and have a fabulous machining rig.

Re: Powered tapping

I done a lot of tapping using power.
Hundreds of thousands of tap holes.?
I used both drill press using a drum switch and tapping head.?

I've not done any power tapping wit my mini-lathe, but I have with my mini-mill

Hi Bruce look into internet archives on the net there is so much info there.

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum

As read you things in old magazines? that are new today. Maybe they read the old magazine too.?

I do not know why there not more written on EDM tap removal.
I have run a edm to remove broken bolts. It work great.?
The reason I never had one I could use a fluxcore welding and remove taps and bolts.?

It¡¯s amazing to read through these old magazines, and realizing just how much the internet has displaced them in such a short time, and the fact that before Google Books, just reading through these old issues would be difficult or impossible for most people

An EDM for Tap removal

One of our group moderators, DrMico60, has built and then improved an EDM suitable for tap removal, see:

He provides enough info to allow building a modest cost unit which would remove broken taps or make holes in hard material like tool steel.

For tap removal a hollow eroding tool just large enough to break into the flutes of the tap will reduce the amount of? material eroded, speeding up the process.?

How many libraries have a complete archive of Popular Mechanics back to 1905? Let alone all the archived other periodicals there.?
