Re: Is Something Strange Going On at Little Machine Shop?

Many things are possible.? Perhaps they automatically send out "shipped" emails as soon as they know the container with?their shipment is at the port. (It's only 20-30 miles away, and in normal times it would be an hour to go get it). Or maybe I got the?"shipped" email just because someone hit a wrong button.? ?This is a busy, chaotic time and I'd prefer not to bother them.

At?any rate,? I've been home for two weeks recovering from bronchitis and I probably wouldn't have installed the thing by now anyway.? And on Saturday I'm going on vacation to New Hampshire, so I can't install it then, either. But if there isn't some progress by the time I leave, I'll probably call them then.

Depends on their definition of "shipped."? Maybe when the order leaves the Order Dept. (or whatever they call it) and heads towards Shipping it is considered shipped.

Actually, for a lot of things where you might want to remove the existing solder (such as leads going through holes) professional rework often involves a vacuum desoldering station.? This is nothing but a soldering iron and solder sucker combined and put on steroids.? A metal tip with a hole in it gets hot to melt the solder, and vacuum sucks away the solder through that hole.? They are spectacularly effective.? You can even buy rework stations that both hot air desoldering AND vacuum desoldering in one unit (one station, two separate devices).? And there are other ways, although not likely for the home shop, such as the ¡°solder fountain¡± and what you might imagine is actually pretty much what it is.

Dick, as a thought, there are carbon fiber tubes In a variety of sizes from suppliers to kite hobbyists. They are remarkably light and stiff. This could reduce the problem to the design of fittings to join this tubing. Who knows, they might be molded from J B Weld!?? Bill in Boulder

Hi Dick, for a project like this the easier material would be roving which is wetted out in resin and allowed to harden in a mold ( almost anything that can hold it in shape) while it cures. For simple parts, pretty simple molds can be used, particularly if mold reusability is not a concern. A piece of fiberboard with a 1/8 x 1/4 kerf cut into the edge would work. Add some paste wax to make?release easier.

?

Fabric and prepregs are also available but would be less suited for something like this.

For all practical purposes, carbon fiber and glass fiber are worked in pretty similar ways.

But if someone is going to be working with surface mount, or doing a whole lot of rework, then a hot air station is pretty much a necessity nowadays.? But it is not a necessity for the occasional odd job of a regular pinned IC or similar.

Hot air solder stations have pretty much revolutionized repair work.? ?It is rare today for a repair tech to reach for the solder iron.? ?Partly this is because most new parts are surface mounted and hot air is the only option but people have found the hot air is just better for many parts on PCBs.? ?I can take a 14-pin dip off a PCB in about a half minute with no damage to the chip.

?

I suggested clipping all the pins only because that method works with a solder iron.? But it does destroy the chip.

?

Even a cheap Chinese clone hot air station works very well.? ?The Amazon link below has a link to a video where a?technician removes a 20+ pin chip in about 10 seconds.? It takes longer to remove an old through-hole chip because more heating is needed but only about 3X more time.? ?The video is self-explanatory and shows why these tools 1st choice now.

Mario,
I understand how it works now. The carbon fiber is used similar to fiber glass cloth.
I am a mold maker and designer by trade so should have no trouble with this if I decide to pursue this further.
Thanks for the explanation!

Re: Steering wheel adapter

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Short answer is ¡°yes!¡± ¡now for the ¡°ugly¡± part of the answer¡

When you ?are printing an ¡°object¡± on a 3d printer it typical uses an input file that is in STL(or other 3D format) file which can be scaled while retaining full resolution¡The potential problem is that most object were designed with several other objects¡ For example a cylinder, a sphere, cube, torrid, etc. and are combined together and then ¡°baked¡± (a term used to take the finished set of objects fused together to form a single object which is much more efficient for printing (or milling).?

The problems you can run into when scaling a baked object is that you scale everything¡ If you have, let¡¯s say a washer shape. If you expand it, not only the outside gets larger but the hole and the thickness does as well¡ If you had the two cylinders that were used to make the washer, then you could could increase just the outside shape while the inside cylinder that is used to ¡°cut out¡± the hole remains in place¡ When combining there are options that allow adding objects together as well as subtracting them¡two cylinders with the same heights but with different diameters can share the same center location but the second (smaller diameter) has it combining property set to ¡°remove¡¯¡this is what makes the hole.

I have a CNC router which is a subtractive process (removes material) while a 3D printer is an additive process¡It looks like what you are trying to have made is nothing more than something that could be turned on a lathe (metal)..

Re: Steering wheel adapter

Only marginally. 3D prints are typically a few layers of ¡¯solid¡¯ over an interior of varying degrees of non-solid infill. This greatly reduces printing time and filament usage for not much decrease in strength. Particularly with modern slicing algorithms the printers can intelligently reinforce critical parts of the object.

It¡¯s similar to trying to turn down, say, PVC pipe, which if you look closely is a skin of solid PVC over a foam-like interior. You can get solid PVC pipe but it¡¯s noticeably more expensive.
