I believe it has something to do with the 16 inch bed being designed for use with a BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) motor which drives the spindle directly via a belt. The only SIEG lathes that I know

Steve; You can pick up a used bed,and lead screw on here,and,if you bolt both beds down,and line them up ,you can add another 16 in. Lead screws can be joined by turning a lap joint,and pin it.
