When I first got my mini-lathe, I fabricates a plastic cover for the gears and dillie the cavity behind the cover with some cup grease. This was 20 years ago and I have had no problems with it.

I stopped using white lithium grease loooong ago. It tends to become a bit hard and not lube. I changed to synthetic heavy duty grease. Much much better. George
