Hello Dick,
?
I'm glad that you are happy with both Google Drive and your Micromark 7x16. I try to pass along the things that have worked well for me, along with the things that have not, like the milling attachment for the 7x lathes. But in the end it is all personal opinion. A bad one will always seem to slip through every now and then no matter what it is.

Hi Michael,

The milling head is part of my Unimat DB200 lathe. I made an adapter for the mini lathe and it works very well within it's size limitations.
By the way, I do have to thank you for your reccomendation to use Google Drive. Also I might mention that you were instrumental in my buying the MicroMark 7 X 16 lathe. I read the case you made for the MicroMark about 5 years back and I have never had second thoughts on my purchase.

Very nice!

Did you turn the worm screw or is it purchased/retasked?

Very nice piece of work, but it is too easy to make counting errors, so I went digital.
<>
I used a left hand worm, so the helix angle move the drive away from the head. I also cut the worm so that the backlash can be almost reduced to zero.

That worked nicely. All 4 pics pop up right away.
Interesting header too, can you imagine a 7x16 mm lathe? Yes, I know, Micromark, but things just pop into my head when bored.
The little tool post mill/drill caught my eye as well. Where?s that adapted from?

Good news.
The old dried grease was softened by spraying WD40 into the joint on both sides of the pot metal casting so i could pull out the shaft and gear. On inspection i found the previous owner had never cleaned the shipping grease out of that joint but had tried to dab some lithium grease in the general direction of the bearing but to no effect.

I failed to disassemble the parts in the 6 years i have owned this 7x10 harbor freight lathe so am guilty of neglect.
Once cleaned and reassembled with wheel bearing grease the mechanism now works smoothly so back to making chips fly.

Thanks for all your help and advise

There are official published formulas for denaturing ethyl alcohol. ?Each is intended to make the stew undrinkable (and difficult to purify), yet still suitable for use in different applications.

Did I mention "precaution handling"?? I said it may work differently, might just mean today's batch corrodes metal or removes a finish that yesterday's batch didn't.

As it's already flammable I doubt they'd make it more flammable.? But in precautions you might get a batch that irritates skin or your breathing when it didn't in the past.

Unlike WD-40 with it's tightly controlled formula this stuff varies around.? That's all.?

It is also, as the steamers know, flammable, but it does extinguish with water and does not go boom.? In addition to WD40, I've used it (both outdoors) and turpentine effectively to remove caked grease in the past.? Don't get impatient though, it does take a while to soak clear through.? Do not use rubbing alcohol though - high percentage of water that could make it worse (rust trumps varnish in a fist fight) and if you use alcohol, oil (or WD 40 immediately on release.? It leaves the metal totally unprotected with an affinity for moisture.

Vintage single malt is also useful.....you put the denatured on the part and the single malt in you.? It makes the waiting go so much faster? 8-)

Thats what i needed to know. ?It looks like the original grease dried in the die cast cover end of the shaft and glued the shaft and the 45 tooth gear so they could not turn. ?
I will gently pry the shaft out and see if the die cast cover is still capable of acting as a bearing or if I need to take further action to repair or replace.

Hi Pete,

I made the dog clutch in 2009 so don't recall the details. I do know it wasn't difficult to remove and replace that shaft without removing the die cast cover on the end of the machine.

However, it's trivial to remove the die cast cover, it's held by two socket head bolts - takes only a couple minutes to remove with gears and fwd/rev in place. Once off you can see that the cover does function as the bearing for that end of the shaft; the bracket serves as the bearing closer to the mid point of that shaft.?

If the shaft seized in either bearing then you need to get it out of the seized bearing (which could be a challenge).? Assuming you get it out without too much damage you can drill or ream the hole a little larger and make and press fit? a brass bearing.? Clean up the shaft where it seized, add a little lube, reassemble and it's probably better than new.
