Re: Mini Lathe - Mini Mill

I was on the mini mill yahoo group. It was a long time ago. Maybe someone here can answer this question. If its?not appropriate here please let me know and accept my apologies.?
I have done a lot of upgrades to my mill over the years, but haven't done this one.

So I was wondering if there were any comments on it. I have the Fignoggle? delrin split? nuts on the mill now with the metric screws for reduced backlash. I was wondering how the backlash on these SAE leadscrews and nuts is.?

Re: LMS 5200 Lathe motor

Hi Jon, I am just an occasional user of the lathe, mill and band saw.
The motors have all performed excellently.
I use the foot pedal on the mill and bandsaw with a 100k POT on the lathe for speed control.
Using reverse is a pain with the stock controller, which I am "thinking" of replacing.
I just substituted?the pulleys with adapters for the motor shaft.
I am "thinking" of mounting the lathe motor directly on the jackshaft with the pulley reversed
essentially?eliminating any pulleys as far as speed control goes. I have a Craftsman?12x36 lathe.
I highly recommend?the motors especially for the cost/performance.

Re: Steady rest tune-up

--

Since I have just been cleaning and painting a steady that was given to me for my Boxford A lathe, your post caught my attention. I like the big open gate at the top. It bolts onto the ways with a plate underneath the bed. ? I have been using this with no problems. It has hardened steel fingers. I have not seen significant damage to my work, but it can be expected. Just plan for it I suppose and expect to re-turn the circumference later, when you can fit a tailstock center. ?I have been turning stainless steel, which can handle it. I love the way it forces the work to stay concentric. This is important for the ER32 collet holder I am making for a grinding/milling-motor attachment to go on the cross-slide in place of the compound slide. ?(Love Quinn Dunkie's work. I don't have a milling machine, but then a milling tool on the cross-slide might help.).

X axis DRO, my next project

Hi all.

For my next lathe project I'm thinking about adding an X axis DRO.? It's really the one axis there's no built in measurement for and I think I'd really like it for boring to a specific depth and tasks like that.? I'm currently looking at the Shars stainless 24" units as I have a x14.

If anyone has tried these, how do they deal with all the electrical "noise" from the lathe?? I have three 6" Mitutoyo digital calipers and two sets absolutely freak out within three or four feet of the lathe if it is running.? The other set is okay and my 4" Vinca are good.? I'm concerned the Shars DRO won't deal with the noise either so any experience with the Shars or any brand, good or bad would be appreciated.? Thanks!

Ryan

Re: LMS 5200 Lathe motor

It's frequently possible to get a free treadmill on bulk trash day! If not, they're usually available cheaply at thrift stores. In addition to the motor & controller, there's usually quite a bit of square tubing & other metal stock for all sorts of projects. I've also gotten quite a bit of useful stuff from discarded motorized exercise bikes.

Hi Chris

Nice you are following us on the Group.

I have an electrical question: how do you make ?120 V to a 220 V motor?? (Just for education!)

?

The 5200 lathe lamps is for 220 V, so it is difficult to read, but easy to fix.

To day with my broken motor, I see the FAULT lamp is glowing a littlebit.

Can you explain FAULT error ?

I will take out the rotor from the front side, all cables are going in back.

If I am remembering correct, there are some springs on the back part I have to be carefully with.

The rotor is a littlebit difficult to drag out, very heavy magnetism

The first and last time I open this 5200 LMS motor , I saw the axel was ugly under the bearing.

This time I will take some pictures.

Which? is? the best?? buy ??

That 7x14? price is now $700 at Walmart.ca . About the best buy?? I think the Vevor are the 'bottom of the heap' in quality, so hard to tell. I have a 7x14 lathe and I would not be happy with a 7x12 or smaller, so my advice is to get at least 7x14. The best buy would probably be on the local used listings (craigslist, kijiji, etc..) to find a machine from somebody nearby.
