Here is lowest-priced EDM machine.

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum

It is on subject? about safely removing a tap.
Nitric acid is not safe to use it can also damage your part.?

Sorry I know it not the answer you wanted. It would nice if they made a low cost EDM .

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum, comment to the remark

Hi Mike,

May I make a comment please:
The original subject had nothing to do with the 7x12 mini-lathe group name.
That said, since this off-topic wasn't criticized, I (and others) felt free to diverge from the original thread.
I'm so sorry as well but, in the future, I strongly suggest that the threads MUST be in line with the group name and I promise I'll hardly stick to the rule.
Have a nice day. Regards

Then it drifted to the related topic of doing this with EDM machines, then it drifted to drilling and tapping and now to helicoils, neither of which is related at all to the subject.

This doesn't really affect my subject.? I wrote what I wanted to say about nitric acid and there were several useful responses, so people who want to learn about that can see it, and people who want to learn about this in the future will find it.?

But I feel sorry for people interested in EDM, helicoils, and the other things being discussed. Those are all now hidden under a subject line saying the discussion is about acid, so there's not much chance casual readers will notice them, now or in the future.??

So you're basically writing careful posts about these things and, in terms of whether future readers will ever find them, you might as well be flushing them down the toilet.

?So I wish people would have more discipline about subject lines. To start a new topic, just change the subject -- by even a single word. That will automatically start a new thread with a relevant subject. If more people did that, this group would be more useful.

Helicoils are especially made for repairing threaded holes

The name of those is time serts. I used them back in the 70s and all through my career. I absolutely despised heli coils.

after the tap's loose enough to remove, you could plug the hole and redrill it.? I've corrected misdrilled holes (sometimes done by the factory!) by drilling and tapping a larger hole, then screwing in a bolt with permanent threadlocker or epoxy.? Then saw it off flush with the surface and you have fresh metal to drill and tap where you want it.

All had to do was wirer the transformer in 2009.

If look close I used a left hand acme thread witch not need but had time.?
I also include a vibrator not need but had time .?

Re: Milling in a lathe.

My situation was similar - 20 years ago - a small amount of milling in the mini-lathe.

And I have to say my mill is, considering the price, only a little bit better.

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum

Sorry for being a little off subject but this is a lot safer than Using nitric acid .

I do not no of anyone use lathe has not broken a tap.
I will dig out my edm and photograph it was made on a lathe not wood.

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum

I uploaded more data on EDM machines.
If all you building is just tap removal they simple .
I have run a EDM for Automovie Machine? it was simple machine.? It like running a drill press not very fast but remove the taps and bolts.?

Here is the schematic on one most I found was about same used a 200 watt 120 light bulb or resistor.??

The dielectric fluid on some was just water.?

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum

You can mix your own dielectric fluid .
All the ingredients are found home.?
Some where have mix for low cost dielectric fluid?

Dave?

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum

I rarely use EDM, despite having a small commercial machine! It always takes longer to set up than it seems like it should + it makes a mess. There's always a lot of dielectric fluid that gets splashed out during the process, no matter how deep the enclosure is.

I get good results with small carbide rotary files to remove the central portion of the broken tool, along with shaking the debris out fairly often. Particularly for small stuff, carbide dental bits in a dental handpiece work well. I wouldn't want my dentist to use them on me, but, there are a lot of inexpensive, Indian dental bits available.

Milling in a lathe.

20 years ago I had no mill so had to use my lathe and a Aloris tool post and holder it work great .?

If did a lot would done more by using use tool holder and plate bolt to holder.

I found this that may give some ideas.?

From what I can see the EDM machines are not affordable for the average hobbyist unless I am missing something.

Re: Using nitric acid to remove broken taps or drills from aluminum

You have Automovie Machine Shop do the work. Most today are for machining but ato shops use the lower cost ones.

You can build one for a microwave transformer.? Very low cost just for taps.?

I started one but did break taps so unfinished.?

Like Miket_NYC said?It is very dangerous to use.
If see cooking shower what them use liquid nitrogen it too in dangerous. Nitric acid is more dangerous.?

Use a EDM machine if do not have got to your locale Automovie Machine Shop and they cheaper that time spent in the Hospital???and the bill.?

There is a lot out there you buy it is not safe. Besides that the FEDs look to see what you doing.?
