Re: Chips in my Shop

I wear a different pair of shoes and remove them before coming up from my basement.?

Chips LOVE to get stuck in carpeting.? So I have a piece of scrap carpeting in front of the door from the garage into the house.? The chips get fooled into thinking it is somebody’s nice home carpeting and get stuck there.

That is strange; I think it’s then something in whatever email client you’re using.

If it’s any web link in any email, it might be?possibly some obscure preference setting to disable web links. But if it’s just this list I'm at a loss.

Twisting in the bed is more of a problem with heavier lathes than the 7x lathes, because they’re normally levelled and bolted down to the floor. They can get a twist if out of level

If a 7x has a twisted bed, the fix is to replace it, pretty much, because that’s a bad casting, since they just sit on the bench.?

her lathe is a larger one and has the same kind of ‘push-pull’ tailstock adjustment that one of Ted Hansen’s add-ons does. Someone just posted their tailstock after doing that. She also has a useful video on making tapers in the lathe (specifically an MT2 taper designed to fit in her tailstock.) that touches on re-aligning the tailstock?

Are you getting these posts via email or directly on the forum site? If so what mail client? There are a lot of variables that can come into play for an issue like this.

Yours and other's links are clickable in the emails I get.?

The one in the original post was somehow mangled and did not come across as a clickable link.

This IS a depth micrometer. It's accurate to two decimal places. It's just being sold as a tire tread gage. Assuming it's properly made (not a guarantee with Banggoods stuff), I see no reason why it can't?be used.

Re: Depth gauge

Yes.? A “depth micrometer” is a different measuring tool.? A “depth micrometer” would be the mechanical style micrometer scheme with the rotating barrel.? The Bangood device is, however, a real “digital depth gauge” (in the same sense as a “digital caliper”).? It is just a pretty cheap one and being marketed with a tip on it suitable for checking tires.? But it would be completely usable for machining within its limits.

?

It does seem to have a plastic base (cheap) instead of a machined and ground metal base.? It seems to have the identical head on it that I have on a cheap 4” Chinese digital caliper (very handy size sometimes – but it became unreliable so I recently bought a Mitutoyo 4 inch).

?

If I didn’t already have a depth micrometer and wanted something inexpensive, I would probably try one of these.? It is easy to check them.? You can make a setup with gage blocks but most won’t have those.? So instead you set a flat piece you have measured on another flat piece and measure the step.? Not ideal, but probably fine in the world of mini-lathes.? In the case it might read slightly off, it should read slightly off at all positions as an offset error.? You would just have to remember that offset.

I didn’t say it can’t be used. I said I personally prefer a depth micrometer. My response was not negative.
