I have a bud that had a import 8 speed bike . had a generator in the front hub , transmission in the rear hub . They even put a /some capacitors in the system to keep the tail lite lite in case ya stopped the bike for a short period . That bike was much smoother than I remember the Sturmey Archer 3 speeds from way back. I have a vague memory of trying to take a part one of those Sturmey 3 speed hubs & parts & loose ball bearings shooting all over place? , needless to say that hub never shifted gears again .

Closest would be the 3-speed hub gear.? Mainly found on kids bikes, usually with the shifter on the crossbar.

Been around for about 100 years, Sturmey Archer is who you need to Google.? I think Shimano make them as well.

They made a bit of a comeback with early electric bikes before it was decided putting the motor inside the rear hub was a good idea.
