You are not the only one. I am a member of the group.? I have a Yahoo ID. I have signed in. I have access to conversations, photos, attachments and more, but, if I click on Files or All Files I only get a blank page. I used to have access to files! What has happened?

Robert,

You are right, photos show up but there is nothing in the files section.? I assume there were items there in the past but I don't know for sure.? If it is a Yahoo fluke, the files might come back, or might not.

Re: help fix 4x6 bandsaw "Packard Precision" gear worn out

Hi Steve
I think your going to find it very difficult to get a spare off another machine.? Most of the saws I've seen have a 20T bronze gear and I know of 23T.? Yours is the first I've heard of with 17T.
Don't know if the combined shaft centres mean you could replace both gear and worm from another saw.
My 20T-bronze-gear gearbox has shaft centres as near as I can make it 34mm (1.339").? These things were made metric, so I'd expect it to be a whole number of millimeters.?

Re: help fix 4x6 bandsaw "Packard Precision" gear worn out

I have a Packard "heavy duty" 4x6 I bought at a yard sale about 6 years ago for $30.? Model P817, made in Taiwan in '85.? More of a 4x7+,? the right side material stop can be moved to the right and back to give more capacity when needed.? A friend of mine has the same model, similar date that has never been used.? It was apparently assembled, then fell over, breaking one of the pivot bosses, and was put into storage.? I've never compared the gearing in mine to the modern equivalents, but unless they found a cheaper way to do it, I'd think they would still be using the same parts.

I have a?4x6 bandsaw?National brand that is over 40 years old. ?Vendor that sold it went out of business shortly after I bought it. ?Needless to say it is very well used and I have made several parts for it to keep it going. ?The motor finally went out and I found a very rusty Jet saw on C/L for $40.00. ?I bought it for parts hoping they would fit and as it turns out the parts are identical so far. ?

Re: Butt welder

Great resource for us all.??
Just what I need to get mine going properly
Thanks Dallas - jv

Re: Butt welder

Sorry I am a little late to reply, I was out of town when this thread started.? I have created a new folder named Blade Welding, Electric in the files section.? This folder contains several items of use to this topic.

One of the companies I used to consult with had dozens of electric band saw blade welders most of which were built into the various band saws and some stand alone units.? I have successfully welded many blades on these commercial units and when Harbor Freight started selling a blade welder I bought one for my home shop.

I tried dozens of welds with the Harbor Freight unit and was never satisfied with them.? They always broke too soon if not during blade installation, then soon after.? In an effort to investigate the reason, I made measurements of a couple of the welders I had used successfully at work, specifically a DoAll and Powermatic brand.? My conclusion was the HF unit was delivering a little too much voltage.

I made up several dozen blades at work and am still using them and have not modified the HF unit.? Because I have lots of blades I don't a burning desire to get the HF working properly.? But I believe it needs some circuitry to deliver a time variable voltage that can be adjusted both in time duration and voltage.? When I get around to doing this, I plan to use an adjustable one shot timer to drive a solid state relay to deliver a welding pulse. A second circuit to deliver a series of pulses each pulse shorter and shorter pulse width to anneal the blade.

I think the HF just delivers too much energy so fast you literally cannot control it by pressing and releasing the factory power button.? You can't press and release quick enough.

Hopefully my data will help some other frustrated blade welders.

Dallas
